S is for Swinburne, Sappho, Mr. Sardou and Socrates

S is for Swinburne, who, seeking the true, the good, and the beautiful, visits the zoo,
Where he chances on Sappho and Mr. Sardou,
And Socrates, all with the same end in view.

The Letter ‘S’

The letter ‘S’: Four magniloquent figures stand before the monkey cage at the zoo: English writer Algernon Charles Swinburne, French playwright Victorien Sardou, the poet Sappho from Lesbos and Athenian philosopher Socrates.

From An Alphabet of Celebrities by Oliver Herford (1899).
